An Overview: Background

Since the founding of the five Kwans in 1945 there have been few advances in the art of Tae Kwon Do. In 1967 the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) standardized on the Tae Guek forms to help alleviate the confusion created by all of the different Tae Kwon Do schools that were coming into existence.

Since Tae Kwon Do became a fully sanctioned Olympic event, there has been an increase in public awareness. Unfortunately, this exposure has given many people the impression that Tae Kwon Do is a sport in which participants spar for points. There is a belief that WTF, Tang Soo Do and International Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF) forms, in all their elegance and grace, have not adapted well as a martial art. Many schools teaching traditional Tae Kwon Do only teach ITF and WTF forms and leave it to the student to apply what they learn from the forms to self defense. Furthermore, the forms only teach basic offensive and defensive techniques and do not lend themselves to practical self defense on the street.

With this in mind, Grand Master Kim, Soon-Chul of USA Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Center in Chicago, Illinois has developed a set of sparring forms named In Young Ryu. Master Kim developed these forms to advance Tae Kwon Do as a martial art and form of self defense and to allay the growing misconception that Tae Kwon Do is solely a competitive sport. In Young Ryu has been developed outside of the traditional ways of thinking, using strikes not commonly associated with Tae Kwon Do. These forms provide extensive techniques that are applicable not only in class and sparring, but to practical street use. Master Kim as designed these techniques so that they are of immediate benefit to all who study them.

Master Kim is an Internationally Certified Instructor with over 40 years of experience. Before establishing USA Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Center, Master Kim instructed Tae Kwon Do in Korea, Austria, Spain, France, Germany, and Denmark. Additionally, he has given over 300 demonstrations in 15 countries. It is this experience that allowed him to create ten new "basic" forms and the 50 sparring forms of In Young Ryu. He has chosen the name In Young Ryu to reflect that students of all disciplines, ages, and ranks are accepted and embraced by the school.

In Young Ryu As a Tae Kwon Doist you are a member of the Tae Kwon Do family, you must be willing to stand up for what is right and be responsible for your own actions.
