An Overview: Philosophy

The philosophy behind In Young Ryu is simple but deep. Through the study of In Young Ryu, a student seeks balance between mind and body. Harmony can be achieved through overcoming the physical challenges of the method and its forms. To fully comprehend its meaning requires study and practice, but a basic explanation can be found in its name.

The In of In Young Ryu represents balance and peace on many levels. For the student it means finding the inner strength to overcome and master the physical challenges of the martial arts. Concentration and practice of the physical aspects of In Young Ryu enables the student to develop an indomitable spirit and achieve what Confucianism refers to as "authoritative conduct"; to become an "authoritative person". This concept applies not only to the individual but to the world as a whole. Cooperation and peace among individuals, groups, and nations is at the center of the meaning of In: A master and student work together to pass on knowledge. One community must respect another to live together. Nations must be able to see past their differences to achieve their mutual goals and live in peace. To find this balance is the goal of In Young Ryu.

Young literally means "mountain". In Young Ryu is made up 50 forms the student must learn and perfect and each is named for a different Korean mountain. Mountains are tall, strong, and mysterious. Only through great effort can one explore the entire mountain. Because all things can be found on a mountain (rocks, water, air, earth, plants, animals, gold, etc.) it becomes an excellent metaphor for the universe, for the world we inhabit. It also represents the strength of mind, body, and spirit a student of In Young Ryu may achieve. Young, the mountain (or universe), is influenced by In. In other words, a student of In Young Ryu seeks not only to better himself or herself and become an authoritative person, but seeks to bring this enlightenment to the world they live in.

Ru could simply be described as the study of the concepts described above, but the true meaning of Ru is much deeper. While a student may study and practice the techniques of In Young Ryu, and intellectually understand their meaning, it is another thing to truly come to understand and embrace these concepts and make them part of the self. Ru is the lifelong journey of self-improvement, of finding peace with one’s self and one’s neighbors, family, and friends. It represents true enlightenment.

In Young Ryu As a Tae Kwon Doist you are a member of the Tae Kwon Do family, you must be willing to stand up for what is right and be responsible for your own actions.
